Good morning all, and happy new year
We’re well into 2024 now, so in this first instalment of the competitor newsletters, I wanted to bring you all up to speed on what’s to come over the next few months in the run up to your big day.
This first email is to both Cotswold 113 and Cotswold Classic competitors, but from the next email onwards, they’ll be specific to each race.
There’s a fair amount to cover in this email, and those that have raced with us before, know I can ramble on a bit, so please grab yourself a coffee and a comfy chair and I’ll try and keep it as brief as possible.

Getting your training underway 
We’re now at the that stage of the year where lots of you are starting to think about adding some structure to you training (even though it’s bloody freezing outside still).
I appreciate that everyone’s different, so we’ve asked Ollie, our local coach, to put together a free outline 16 week plan if anyone’s interesting in following it. Ollie knows our race well, and has competed with us several times, so understands what’s required well.
His info is on the plan, so if any of you get any questions, or need something a little bit more specific, drop him a line

Checking details and swapping between races
I’m quite conscious that about now, we start to get competitors that have perhaps entered the June race, and now suddenly realise it’s only a little over 5 months away, and fancy swapping to the July race. Or people that have entered the July race, and have suddenly remembered it’s their Wedding anniversary, kids birthday etc. Whilst we still have spaces in both races, if anyone wants to swap between them, it’s nice and easy for me to do now, but perhaps might be a little more difficult nearer the time.
Also, if you’ve entered as an Aquabike, and now fancy doing the run too, or vice versa, or fancy a relay entry instead, those are all easy changes this far out.
The official deadline for swapping between categories, ie Solo entry to Aquabike, is 8 weeks out
For swapping between races, it’s up to 8 weeks, or whenever the other race becomes full

Also, it’s worth now checking your entry confirmation email from Entrycentral.com to ensure all your info is correct too please.
We don’t post you anything out in the run up to the race, but just in case we have lost property or a prize, please check your address is correct
Your christian name will be on your race bib too, so please check that you’ve got that in there and spelt correctly*
*We had a lady by the name of Virginia race with us a few years back, and her Spellcheck changed her name to a well known lady part, but this was only picked up by the printer and corrected before she turned up on race weekend to find that written on her bib – Subsequently, I always send out a check reminder 🙂

Race weekend outline 
Many of you will now want to start planning your weekends, so here’s a basic outline of the race weekends with us.
It’ll go something like this;

Saturday
12:00-17:00 – Registration*
10:00-17:00 – Option to Swim
13:00 / 16:00 –  Briefings
Sunday (Race day)
04:30 Transition opens (We do all our racking on the Sunday Morning)
06:25 Mass Start Wave**
06:30-07:30 Rolling start Waves**

* Don’t worry if you can’t make it on the Saturday, we can make arrangements for someone else to register on your behalf, or have it picked up earlier in the week – Get in touch nearer the time, and we can sort an option that works for you

** All Competitors will get a chance to choose which wave and/or type of wave they want about 6 weeks out from the race once the start list is fixed

Staying near the lake on race weekend
If you fancied staying down in the Cotswolds and making a weekend of it (a good chunk of you normally do), there’s a couple of decent options whether you like to camp, or prefer thew warmth of a hotel bed
The Cotswold Lake Brewery is only a few hundred meters from the lake, and they put on camping for competitors on race weekends. Their website is https://cotswoldlakescamping.com/

Alternatively, you might like a warm hotel, and by far the closest and best hotel is the Devere Cotswolds, which is about 3 miles from the start and actually on the June 113 Bike course. Their website is https://www.devere.co.uk/cotswold-water-park-hotel
If you’re looking for an AirBnB or similar, there’s lots of little towns and villages within a few miles, and the postcode for the race Start / Finish location is GL76DF – Our run course goes through Somerford Keynes, and it’s an easy walk to the race start from there.

If you have any friends or club mates that are still considering racing, we still have slots left in both races and all categories, and neither are quite full yet

Payment plan entries
If you’ve either entered through the normal 1 off payment route, or have completed your payment plan payments, you can ignore this next bit.

This is the first year we’ve tried a payment plan system, and as much as it’s been very popular, it’s also been a steep learning curve for us.
Firstly, apologies that it’s a little misleading and people assumed that it was a direct debit payment over 3 months, when it’s actually not
You need to head online and make the payments 2 and 3 manually. There’s a unique link to do that on either your original entry confirmation email, or on the subsequent reminder emails.
Don’t worry, we haven’t withdrawn anyone that missed payments yet, and this is just a reminder that a fair few of you still need to head online and make payments 2 and 3 please.
If you haven’t got your booking confirmation or reminder emails with the payment links on them, please just get in touch and I can regenerate them.

Getting involved 
Our races have a great reputation for having some of the best marshals in the sport. We have around 200 Paid Marshal positions on race weekends, and typically, about 60-70% of these are regulars, and the others are friends and families of Competitors.
If you have friends and family, or club mates, or anyone else else you can rope into getting involved in the more fun side of the day, we’d absolutely welcome them to our team.
Everyone gets paid too, and whilst I appreciate it’s not mega bucks, all our marshals get paid either £20 cash, or a £50 113 Events Voucher.
We’ll give them a 113 events team shirt, they can camp and park for free very close to the start, and we’ll keep them in hot food, drinks and ice creams all day.
We take all the marshals through a full team briefing, kit them up with everything they’ll need,  and all we ask is that they’re over 16, and know their left from their right.
It’s a fun day, and the shifts are pretty short too, so please get in touch at graeme@113events.com

What to expect over the next few months 
Like I mentioned at the start of this email, your next emails will be event specific whereas this one is to everyone entered into either the Cotswold 113 and Cotswold Classic.
The next email you’ll be getting from me will be Mid March timing, when we have fixed up the dates for the Course Familiarisation days.
These are free of charge days, where you can come down to the lake, and we’ll take you all for a leisurely paced lap of the Bike and run courses (they’re 2 laps and 3 laps repectively on race day). The emphasis of these days is very much leisurely, so they’re suitable for all paces, and they’re a great chance to see the courses before race day to settle any nerves, meet the team as well as other competitors.
They tend to be around 6 weeks before each race, and the reason we don’t fix them until March-ish timing, as in order to keep them free of charge for you all, is we have to fit around any other bookings the guys at the lake may have.
As we get closer to the race, we’ll get out things like the race information pack, as well as emails covering everything else you’ll need to know prior to race day.
About 6 weeks out from the race, once the start list is fixed and frozen, you’ll get an email asking if you want to choose a specific bib number, or a group of bib numbers to be racked with your mates. You’ll also get a chance to choose a specific wave, and whether you want to start in the mass start, or go off in a rolling start wave – I can only process those requests once the race is fixed and I have the start list on a spreadsheet, so please await this email about 5-6weeks before the race.

2024 Races open online on July 28th

Hey All
I just wanted to send out a quick email to say that 2024 races open this week, and we have some cool new stuff for next year too.

*Both races now feature an AquaBike option too for 2024

In order to make races more affordable for all, we’ve brought in an Early bird entry price to reward those that commit early (first 200 Entries), and brand new for us in 24, we’ve introduced a new 33/33/33 Payment plan to help spread the cost of your entry fee, so you can pay as little as £57.67 every 3 months to get on the start line next year

Post race email

Hey All
Firstly, thank you all so much for choosing to race with us this year. It’s a tough time in the Triathlon industry at the moment, so we truly appreciate you all putting your trust in us with your Middle Distance racing.
Hopefully, you’ve all (depending on what time you were on the run course), either dried out or didn’t get too sunburnt
We had a really mixed day in terms of Weather today, and it delivered an almost ideal day in the end where it was pretty much dry for the bike, and then a few light showers to take away the heat of the afternoon sun on the run.
I appreciate you’re probably all over my constant emails by now, and I’m ready for bed too, so I’ll keep this one quite brief.

ShirtGate 
I have to open this bit with an Apology. Somehow, we lost a box of Large Compeititor shirts so a handful of you that had ordered one, didn’t get one. I appreciate we managed to get some of you in either a Medium or an XL, but it’s poor form from us for those of you that didn’t get into an alternative size.
I’m still no clearer on how we lost the box, but I’ve asked the printer to sort some more, and I have the details of all those that did miss out, and will get them posted out as soon as they arrive with me
Sorry again, this is crap from us, and something we’ll ensure doesn’t ever happen again

Bike course and race details
As you’ll probably know, this was a new Middle Distance bike course we used today, and I’m super keen to hear what people thought of it, especially for those of you that have raced on our June and previous July bike course please
Feedback is mega important to us and we have a debrief with the team a few days after each race and pick through the race in fine detail to see what we can improve on and what seemed to be well recieved
This, of course, isn’t just limited to the bike course, so please let me have your feedback both good and bad on the race as a whole as without understanding what you all felt on the day, we’re really only guessing as to what people liked or didn’t
Like I said above, it’s a tough time in the industry at the moment with races folding due to lack of attendance, so for us to survive going forwards, we need to know how we can evolve/improve to attract you all back, and for you to tell your mates all about our races, and sing our praises so they come along too.
Your feedback, no matter how big or small, is really appreciated by us

Next year’s races
It feels like we’re still only just starting to get into the swing of the 2023 season, but we’re already well into the planning of next year’s races and what else we can offer.

2024’s dates are now fixed as :
June 2nd – Cotswold 113 Middle Distance tri
July 14th – Cotswold Classic V2 Middle Distance tri

We have some cool new things for next year too, and not only will we be offering an AquaBike option, but in order to help people that are feeling the financial pinch (as many of us are) we’ll have a new 33/33/33 Payment plan so you can spread the cost over 6-7 Months as well as a really decent early bird discount
We’ll also not be increasing the cost of the races from this year, and although we’ve seen increase in costs for pretty much everything we pay for, we have some help next year from a new sponsor that will help us keep the cost the same again and not increase the price as seems the standard in the Triathlon Industry

Entry will open later this month, and we’ll email everyone out and get it all over our social media once the entry date is fixed

A big thank you for today
Despite a fair amount of flapping behind the scenes today (not least an large injured dear on the bike course that required a main road to be closed for over an hour not long before our Swim start, as the police had to call in an armed unit to put it out of it’s pain), the race was actually quite uneventful for us once we got underway, and this is all down to how well everyone of you all behaved whilst out swimming, cycling and running today.
We had virtually zero litter to pick up after the event, and the drafting rules and etiquette guidelines were really well followed, so a massive thank you from me and the team for being such a great bunch of competitors this time and making our days much simpler than can sometimes be the case.

Right, that’s it from me for this year’s race emails, so thanks again for coming to race with 113 Events this year, and we hope to see you all back lining up with us again next year.
I’m off to bed now as I’ve had approx 4 hour sleep in total over the last couple of nights, but if any of you are staying in the area, we’ll be down the lake tomorrow carrying on with the clear up. We have a small amount of lost property that you’re welcome to come and sift through if you’ve left anything behind, and massive pile of shoes and flip flops from the swim start and a fair few boxes of Gels that we’ve bought for this year’s races that will be out of date before next year’s races if anyone wants to come and grab a few

Hope the recovery goes well, and despite that the sports scientist and marketing people will tell you that protein supplements and active recovery is the best way to cure aching muscles, I really like to route of drinking beer and eating pizza

It’s race weekend….

Hey all, I hope everyone’s ready for racing this weekend ?
It’s race weekend starting tomorrow, so I wanted to get one last email out with some advice and guidance on what to expect now the weather forecast appears to be deteriorating 🙁

Depending on which forecast you look at, we’re ether going to get rain Sunday morning to Lunchtime or possible (fingers crossed) only Sunday evening. However, British weather forecasting isn’t exactly known for accuracy, so it’s realistic to prepare for a fully rainy day. Tomorrow looks like it’s almost certainly going to be wet, so the next section is really just advice on how to prepare for that.

Our transition is on Grass. If it rains a lot tomorrow, there’s a good chance that grass could still be very wet on Sunday morning.
The BTF no longer allow plastic boxes in transition, and I can kind of undetstand why as those boxes have gotten ridiculously big over the year’s, and we’ve seen people rock up with boxes with 4 wheels that are pretty much 5foot wide.
Anyway, what’s always popular at our races, and I wanted to offer out as advice, is to bring either a bin bag or something like a Sports Direct / Ikea bag to either put your stuff on top of, or it it looks like it might rain, put your stuff in to keep dry.

Having experienced this mistake myself first hand (foot), I can confirm putting on a set of soaking wet run shoes to run a half marathon is actually not a massive amount of fun.

If you do have a plastic box you wish to bring your stuff to transition in, that’s totally fine and we’ll find you somewhere around the edge of transition that you can leave it, but it won’t be allowed by your bike in your racking slot, and you’re only allowed a small to medium sized Soft bag next to your bike please.

Also, you will get a bike sticker tomorrow when you register, and these stickers stick really well to a dry bike and are water proof once applied. However, if you try and stick it to a wet bike Sunday am, there’s a good chance it could fall off mid ride. As we use these bike stickers to ID a competitor to the correct bike when they come to grab it after the race, if your bike sticker has fallen off, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until the end of the day to get your bike once all the others have been picked up.

In the morning on Sunday, we’ll put a small gazebo near the swim start, so if you wanted to wear and old coat, jumper, Mankini* etc over your wetsuit to keep you warm before you get into the water, you can dump it there and collect it after the race
* The mankini did actually happen once at our race, as the guy was doing the race as part of his stag, so wore a mankini over his speedos for the swim and a ballerinas Tutu for the run.

Anyway, hopefully this is just a warning for nothing, and we’ll be enjoying a perfect 19deg and overcast racing day, but you never know, so I wanted to get an email out early just to prewarn you all

For info, the lake was a nice 21.3deg today and the run course will still be 99% fine on Sunday even if it rains al day Saturday

Only 2 and bit weeks to go…..

Good evening all, I hope everyone’s well ?
We’re on the home straight now in the run up to the race, so this instalment of the Competitor newsletter will bring you some more info on the race and give you a chance to make some choices.

Get your friends and family involved
Without the marshal team, this race simply wouldn’t happen. We have around 140 paid positions on race weekend, and we still need to fill about 20 of them.
If you have friends or family that are coming down, and fancy seeing the race from the easier side, we’d absolutely love them on our team for the day please.
We pay all our marshals too, and they can choose from either £20 cash or a £50 113 Events Voucher (that can be transferred from one person to another), and get free Camping/Parking on site right near the swim start/race finish and we’ll keep them in ice creams, Burgers and coffee’s all day as well as giving them a team shirt to keep
They don’t need any experience at all, and we’ll take them through a full briefing

This tells you everything you need to know about the race weekend, and is super important that you do please all take the time to read it.
I’m pretty sure it covers everything from registration requirements to Aid station menus etc, but if you get any questions, please just ask

Planning your kit for race day
I suspect you’ll now be well into the stage where you’re planning what kit to bring on race day, so I wanted to give you a heads up and some insight into the courses.

For the Swim, the Water temperature is currently around 20-21 deg, and I’m very confident that on race day we’ll be well within the Wetsuit optional water temp range.
We’ll provide you with a swim hat too, so you won’t need to worry about bringing one of those along.
The sun does rise over the far side of the lake, which you swim towards from around 300-800m into the lap, so if you have lightly tinted goggles, these are a good option (Assuming it’s going to be sunny)

For the bike course, if you have the luxury of choosing between a TT style bike and a road bike, it’s a TT bike course all day long. The road surface is really good for 99% of the new loop, and there’s only a couple of sections near the lake that have any potholes. I do go out the week before the race and spray paint them, so they’re easy to spot and you can easily avoid all of them.

We have moto Support riders and a mechanic on the course for emergencies, but ultimately, it’s the competitors responsibility to be able to change a puncture, and although our guys will, of course, help you, they may take some time to get to you. Most of our competitors carry a spare tube and a pump or a canister for this very reason as punctures do happen unfortunately and as most of you will do your training on UK roads, I’m sure you’re all very used to getting punctures 🙁
We have an aid station on the bike lap, but it’s a reasonable way into the lap, so it’s worth having enough drinks and energy bars/gels/cake to get to that point if you’re planning on using the aid station.
It can be pretty cold first thing in the morning, and you’ll get lulled into a false sense of warmth when you get out the swim, and we often have to recover competitors, that 5-10miles into the ride, get very cold. For this reason, we’re really relaxed with the rule that says you must finish the bike course carrying or wearing what you start off with, and we have no issue with you putting on an extra layer and leaving it with a marshal or spectator out on the course.
It’s well worth packing more kit than you need, than needing more kit than you have – You can always leave it in transition unused.

The run course is around 50% Tarmac, 45% hard packed lake paths and 5% Grass. The non tarmac sections deal with any rain really well, and for 99% of weather conditions, it’s a road shoe course. If the weather is very wet at the lake in the days running up to race day, I’ll keep everyone posted by email
There’s a good amount of shade on the run course too, but some bits are quite open, so worth having a cap, visor or glasses / sunscreen if the weather is anything like our June 113 was.
Some of our competitors will make a full kit change in transition, and it’s totally fine to do this under a towel or swim robe.
The BTF rule says you can’t be naked in transition, and we ask that you try and be as discreet as you can. We’re pretty relaxed as it’s not always possible to completely cover yourself if you are getting changed
But, and I’ve seen both of these actually happen at our races, Naked Lunges down the racking, and big naked see saw motion undercarriage towel drying are not acceptable please as lots of competitors bring their families along to watch them race.

The swim start is about a 100m from the transition in the morning, and is on a stone surface walk. If you don’t fancy walking barefooted, you’re welcome to bring along some old flip flops, trainers, hotel slippers etc and leave them on the waterside where you get in, and you can either collect them after the race, or leave them there and we’ll dispose of them.

Swim Waves / Racking with your mates
The swim will start with an initial mass start at 06:25, followed by 6 waves of ten minute windows in which you can start in a rolling start format and get into the water in your own time on your own – You race time will start as you cross the mat getting into the water. We’ll start people from the chute and in to the water in the rolling start waves every 2-4 seconds :

07:00-07:10 Wave 4
07:10-07:20 Wave 5
07:20-07:30 Wave 6
All of the Mass start and rolling start waves are competitive and are timed, so you can win the race, or your age group from any start format.
The mass start is available by request by email to me
By default, the waves are set by youngest first and eldest last regardless of gender or entry type.
However, you can now choose a specific wave and or race number.

Please read the following before emailing me a choice if you have one.

You can choose any start wave and or format. You don’t need to if you don’t want to and you’ll be allocated a wave based on your age regardless of gender (youngest first, oldest last)
You can also choose a specific number from 10-500inc or a group of random numbers in numerical sequence to be racked with your mates (relays have a separate pen, so cannot choose a number I’m afraid as they work on a different number sequence, but can choose a wave/type)
Typically, when we’ve run this format over the last few years, the mass start has a much faster average swim time. Waves 1-6 tend to have a pretty similar average swim time and no wave is faster or slower

I’ll give you some examples of why you might want to choose a wave.

1) You want to be back in time for songs of praise or a Sunday roast, so will want an earlier wave
2) You might want to have a bit more time in transition / pre race toilet duties, so will want a later one
3) You might want to watch a few waves go off to settle your nerves, so might want a middle one
4) You might be at the less competitive end of the field, and not want to be the last person on the run course, so will want an earlier wave
5) You might be the next Michael Phelps and want clear water in front of you, so will want the mass start

We tend to get about 90% of our competitors choose a wave and/or number, and it’s a really time consuming job for me, so please can you read the following guidelines before getting your request in.
If you are asking for a wave and/or number, please give me your full name, email address and date of birth so I can work out who you are as we often get duplicates of seemingly unique names, not just your John Smiths and Jane Browns.
If you want a specific number, these are first come first served based on the email time stamp, so please give me a 1st choice, a 2nd choice and maybe a 3rd choice if you have one as the numbers get snapped up very quickly (number 69 always seems popular too, but I’ve no idea why 🙂

if you are part of one of our many tri club groups that entered through the group entry system (ie you paid the club and the club paid us in exchange for free entry codes), please can you coordinate the wave you would like with the lead person for the booking – By default, I will put all the group entries together in transition and in the same wave with their groups, unless you have already requested to be in a different wave or number individually.

If you are asking for a group of people to be together in transition and in the same wave, please follow these guidelines.
1) Please ensure everyone in the group actually wants to be in your group before requesting as we very often see a request for a group of names, and half of them have already, or later, then request to be in other groups.
2) Please give me the name, email address and date of birth for everyone you wish to be racked with – This one’s important as it’s often not easy to find someone by their nickname or they have the same name as someone else racing
3) Please ensure that the person you’re requesting to be with in your group is actually entered and is racing (this also happens quite a lot and I spend hours scratching my head trying to find an entry for someone that has not actually entered or later withdrew)
4) For groups of more than 4-5, it’s generally impossible to get you in a selected group of numbers requested (ie you want numbers 205-209), so groups will be allocated a random group of sequential numbers to be racked next to each other.
5) Please get your group requests right first time as we can’t then add another person into your sequence of numbers as the next number up will have been allocated to another group

Please mark any emails requesting waves and numbers with the email title ‘Waves and Numbers’
The window for requesting waves and/or numbers is from now until end of Play on Friday June 23rd  -After that, the start list will be fixed and we cannot accept any more requests
You don’t have to request a wave and/or race number and you’ll be allocated a wave and a random number, but if you do, please follow the above guidelines and rules for requesting
I will get around 5-600 request emails in the next 4 days, so please accept that I cannot respond to them all confirming your wave and/or number choice, and you’ll have to await the start list being published next week
This is a hugely time consuming job for me (think 3-4 days solid), and I like that we can offer it, so please make my life easier and get your requests correct first time rather than trying to chop and change, as this makes me lose more of the little hair I have left.
